Stephenie og Gunnar has released a video comparing the gaits of a Tennessee Walker, Paso Fino, and Icelandic. Although quality of gaits vary across individuals within breeds, I have found that Icelandics tend to be faster than other breeds, you can see the Paso Fino break into a canter to keep up at one point. The Walker exhibits the typical long understride and head nod; rider seat motion tends to be back and forth rather than the side to side typical of a tolt. The Paso Fino has brio, fire, lots of leg action.
They are all beautiful representatives of their breeds.
As a little girl, I always wanted a pony for Christmas. Santa never brought me a pony. So in my late 40s, I started taking horseback riding lessons. When I turned 50, I got my first horse, an Icelandic named Blessi (Veigar frá Búðardal). Little did I know how much fun life with an Icelandic was going to be. Blessi has a unique perspective on life. I hope you enjoy reading about it as much as I enjoy Blessi. And you will probably read about my cats from time to time.

What a great video. I wish there were more like it. Paso Fino is not meant to be fast, it’s more refined, spicy, and flashy. My family is from Puerto Rico, and I owned a paso fino mare. Paso Fino horses are also capable of Paso Cortó, Paso Largo and Andadura, the Icelandic is very similar to Paso Cortó which covers more ground but similar 4 beat gait. I love Icelandics. They and Paso Cortó and Paso Largo are much better for trail rides. Paso Fino and Tennessee walker are more suited for competitions where yet humans can judge them by comparing temperament, bloodlines, and unique specimens of the breed. I love them all.
Thanks for sharing your info about Paso Finos. I'm not familiar with the detailed differences between the paso fino gaits. Did you ride your mare in competitions or trail or both?
