- Blessi's registered name is Veigar frá Búðardal.
- He is a flaxen chestnut with blaze and stands 14.1 hands.
- He was born in Iceland in 1996 and was imported to the US in 2004.
- Blessi has flown in an airplane.
- To the best of my knowledge, he has never eaten dried herring although he stole part of my tuna fish sandwich one time.
- The only foods that he doesn't like are broccoli, corn bread, and shortbread cookies.
- His sire Jarl frá Búðardal was exported from Iceland to Sweden.
- His dam Blessi fra Loni is still in Iceland.
- Both of Blessi's parents are 5-gaited so genetically (AA X AA = AA) he must be 5-gaited also although he has never shown a bit of flying pace.
- At the introductory level of dressage, Blessi has trotted his way to blue ribbons with scores ranging from 63 to 72.
- He tolted his way to the Reserve Icelandic Horse Championship for me at the Evergreen Gaited Horse show.
- Blessi and my dressage instructor beat out all the Western style riders to win the Kitsap Saddle Club Extreme Trail Competition.
- Blessi has tolted his way around Emerald Downs Race Track.
- He loves cats; he will groom them if given a chance. Blessi still does not understand why those black "cats" with white stripes down their backs are so touchy about being groomed.
- Be careful when you laugh at Blessi, he will probably repeat the behavior since he associates laughter with carrots—I don’t know why.
As a little girl, I always wanted a pony for Christmas. Santa never brought me a pony. So in my late 40s, I started taking horseback riding lessons. When I turned 50, I got my first horse, an Icelandic named Blessi (Veigar frá Búðardal). Little did I know how much fun life with an Icelandic was going to be. Blessi has a unique perspective on life. I hope you enjoy reading about it as much as I enjoy Blessi. And you will probably read about my cats from time to time.
